Environmental and indoor measuring

Whenever I went to kindergarden to pick up my kids, I have felt discomfort breathing the air in the playing room. I have the same feeling after staying for too long in closed office or in the bedroom when I do not leave my window open during the night. This happenes in any closed room so if it is possible, I try to avoid such places.

The story: In the mid-18th century, the Scottish chemist Joseph Black discovered carbon dioxide, which he dubbed “fixed air.” Since then, the odourless, colourless gas has been the object of many intense studies.

Early on, the French noble prize and chemist Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier conjectured that too much carbon dioxide is unhealthy. When expelled in breathing it makes crowded rooms uncomfortable. Indeed, it is proved taht CO2 in bedrooms and offices may affect cognition and cause kidney and bone problems. Many researches prove that the indoor levels of carbon dioxide could couse problems to our thinking and may even pose a wide danger to human health.

concentration effects
250-400ppm
Normal background concentration in outdoor ambient air
400-1,000ppm
Concentrations typical of occupied indoor spaces with good air exchange
1,000-2,000ppm
Complaints of drowsiness and poor air.
2,000-5,000 ppm
Headaches, sleepiness and stagnant, stale, stuffy air. Poor concentration, loss of attention, increased heart rate and slight nausea may also be present.
5,000
Workplace exposure limit (as 8-hour TWA) in most jurisdictions.
>40,000 ppm
Exposure may lead to serious oxygen deprivation resulting in permanent brain damage, coma, even death.

When we start measuring actual level of CO2, things are getting scary. In the children room with closed windows the level of CO2 exceeds healthy level in the evening and falls to area of concentration where cognitive dysfunction starts in the middle of the night.

We are setting systems for measuring CO2 as well as TVOC to provide healthier living conditions in kindergardens, schools, offices and homes. The main function is to show when it is time to act and therefore prevent threats of exceeding levels of CO2. In addition our systems can let you know when is the right time to open the window or -in more complex areas – automatically start ventilation.
